Field Trips to the Art Museum

Your classroom away from the classroom

Incorporating the Art Museum experience into your classroom curriculum is a unique and wonderful mode of extending a student’s education. Let the images of artwork seen in their textbooks come alive as they view the actual artwork hanging on the walls of our galleries.

Museum visits allow for a new setting for learning as well as a new process for learning. Students are challenged to think and explore possibilities “outside the box.” Their previous suppositions about art, aesthetics and history reshape themselves as they learn of the different tastes and values held by various cultures from past eras and those of the present.

The Art Museum experience is not limited to extending education in the art curriculum but also in history, language arts, science and even foreign language.

There are a variety of options for planning a field trip to the Art Museum:

Self-Guided Tour: Students are guided through the current exhibit by their teacher or one who was appointed by the teacher.

Guided Tour: Students are led by a docent through the current exhibit.

Workshop Tour: Docent-led tour through the current exhibit followed by a workshop of an exhibit-correlated theme.

It is important to prepare the students for their Museum visit in order for them to receive the best possible experience; therefore, it is a good idea to consult with the Museum’s Education Coordinator before your field trip. We will discuss the purpose of your visit, your current curriculum, what you hope to convey to the students, and possible Museum visit projects and/or assignments.

For further incorporation of your Museum experience into your continuing curriculum, ask if there is an ArtTrunk available for the exhibition you viewed before departing the Museum. The Art Trunk is filled with educational supplements such as books, videos, and activities.
