In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC), the Art Museum is highlighting one of the SCAC’s fellow artists, Joceyln Châteauvert, with one of her extraordinary site-specific installation projects titled it blooms at night. Châteauvert has transformed our Reception Gallery from its original state into a wonderland of beauty, light and fantasy. Iowa-born Châteauvert currently resides in Charleston, SC, where she devotes herself to the art of handmade papermaking. By air-drying her paper, Châteauvert has developed a distinctly organic style. The shrinking of the paper as it dries causes it to crease and twist into plant-like, three-dimensional forms that the artist then artfully arranges to fill and transform spaces. Châteauvert’s work can be found in numerous museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum (DC), Mint Museum (NC) and the South Carolina State Museum.
