Ruth Cox is a Myrtle Beach native.  She attended Myrtle Beach High School, Coastal Carolina University,  and University of SC where she received her BA degree in Art Education.  She was the first art teacher at Aynor High School, and later led volunteers to teach art in Myrtle Beach Primary School.

She had to get a real job for a while, so she did Medical Transcription at Grand Strand Hospital and eventually opened her own transcription service for several local doctors’ offices.

When Ruth reached her 50th birthday, she declared that she was finally going to follow her dream to be an artist.  Her family had been participating in Theatre of the Republic productions where she was the scenery and backdrop painter.  She loved the large scale work, and wanted to paint murals. Since then she has painted murals in hotels, schools, restaurants, businesses, and homes in Myrtle Beach and Conway.  She also will travel for this, and has painted murals in homes in Washington DC suburbs, Maryland, and North and South Carolina.

Ruth also loves teaching.  She has taught painting classes and workshops locally and in nearby cities. She currently teaches painting at Sunset River Marketplace and Gallery in Calabash, NC.

She has always liked painting outside, and when Plein Air painting became popular she became a member of IPAP, International Plein Air Painters.  She does Plein Air workshops or demonstrations for art groups who request it.

Ruth’s work can best be described as impressionist. She likes to paint real recognizable subjects, allowing the brush strokes and the paint texture to be an important part of the image.  She also likes strong dramatic effects of light and darkness.   She was inspired early in life by pictures in library books of the paintings of Monet  and Rembrandt.

Ruth was featured recently in the local magazines: HTC Connections  and Grand Strand Magazine.
