SUMMARY:Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony for the Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 3\, 2018 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for an Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony for the 21st Annual Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild Juried Exhibition. \nThe Art Museum was conceived by a small but visionary group of local art enthusiasts\, among them a group of artists formed in the late 1960s called the Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild. Beginning in the spring of 1969\, a pattern of art exhibitions was established that continues today. To honor the integral role that the Guild played in the Museum’s establishment\, the Museum proudly hosts the Guild’s annual spring juried art exhibition\, which is now in its 21st year. A diverse array of media\, including ceramics\, collage\, drawings\, graphics\, mixed media works in both two and three-dimension\, paintings\, photography\, sculpture\, textiles and wood carving\, all completed by local artists within the past two years\, will be exhibited. \nThis year’s judge is professional artist Douglas Balentine of Charleston\, SC\, who recently exhibited at the Art Museum (summer 2017). Balentine has been drawing and painting as long as he can remember. In 1977 and 1978\, his family lived in Paris\, France\, which was a particularly formative experience for nine-year-old Balentine. Among the innumerable stimuli that daily Parisian life offered\, exposure to art in the Louvre proved to be of lasting influence. Balentine went on to study art at Parsons School of Design in New York and at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence\, Italy. In the mid-1990s\, Balentine moved back to Charleston\, where he began to explore the natural and historic beauty of the area through classical principles that had taken root during his studies. The historic southern city and its environs offered a seemingly eternal source of inspiration.

SUMMARY:Artist-Led Tour of Steven Bleicher | The Kings Highway
DESCRIPTION:Artist-led tour of Steven Bleicher | The Kings Highway\nThursday\, April 19\, 2018 | 2 pm\nFree \nSteven Bleicher | The Kings Highway\nVisit our Exhibitions page for more information about this exhibition.\n“The Kings Highway is not just a place; it is a state of mind.” – Steven Bleicher \nCoastal Carolina University professor Steven Bleicher deals with the theme of Americana and the open road in his art. It is about being on the move. Migration is at the heart and soul of our American psyche\, culture and history. It is influenced by the iconic coastal landscape and the roadside attractions both past and present. Bleicher regularly returns to cruise the highway. In this way\, he has also become part of the road’s nomadic residents. \nThe Kings Highway was the first trans highway and can thus be considered the “father” of all roads. It lines the entire eastern coast of the United States from Florida to Maine\, linking together many of the different paths or segments originally started by the native Americans then adapted and added to by the Spanish and English. It was more formally set in stone with the dawning of a new nation\, The United States of America. George Washington\, as part of his inaugural trip to view the holdings\, or states\, of this new country\, traveled its southern route through the Carolinas to Georgia. The old roads have a rich history and are celebrations of the American zeal for exploration\, expansion and travel. This exhibition will cover elements of the southern portion of the road\, including parts of Florida\, Georgia\, North and South Carolina. \nBleicher’s photorealistic graphite renderings are developed from site sketches and photographs\, which are evocative of the sense of place and of the local industry. The drawings are combined with maps\, a metaphor for the journey\, and found objects from the area to form a complex layering of narrative imagery within a discreet\, unified space.
