Katherine Wynn Patrick

“Painting for me is a form of self-expression and journaling, with a majority of my pieces being inspired by the beauty of nature and landscapes. My hope is that when viewing my work, it brings back a sense of the emotions and atmosphere felt while on location. If it can evoke feelings of wonder or remind someone of past memories, then I feel I have been able to share a small piece of what captivates me about the world around us. I invite you to take a moment and view nature through my eyes.”

Katherine is a skilled oil painter who combines bold colors and fluid brushstrokes to create dynamic, light-filled paintings. She works both outdoors (plein air) and, in her studio, using sketches and photographs taken during her explorations of nature as inspiration. With a BFA in painting from Wesleyan College and additional studies at Massachusetts College of Art, the University of Tampa, and in Italy, where she focused on Renaissance art and architecture, Katherine is committed to ongoing learning and growth as an artist.

Katherine’s work is regularly displayed in a variety of local galleries, including The Georgetown Art Gallery, The Main Street Alliance at The William H. Miller Gallery, the Waccamaw Neck Art Alliance and the Gray Man Gallery. She has also been honored to be featured in multiple Artfields Exhibitions, as well as shows with the Charleston Artist Guild, Artspace 506, The Rice Museum, Island Art, the Myrtle Beach Art Museum, Edisto Arts Guild, Art Harbor and Atalaya Outdoor Arts. Additionally, Katherine’s work has been exhibited in galleries in the Northeast, including a solo show at the North Haven Gallery, Maine, and group shows in New York City with the Salmagundi Club Washington Square exhibit, Long Island, and the Hamptons, as well as, Greenport, and Eastport. Her work has even been shown at Lincoln Center.

Currently, Katherine paints in her studio in Pawleys Island, where she also teaches adult group classes. Additionally, she is the artist-in-residence at a local private school, where she has developed curriculum, taught, and helped students create portfolios for future opportunities. Teaching allows her to not only share her knowledge but also to keep her perspective fresh and evolving. She finds that working with young people, who are curious, open, and eager to learn, keeps her motivated and inspired.

As Georgia O’Keefe said, “There are many things I can say with paint that I can say no other way.” Katherine believes that making art, like learning and growing, is a never-ending process that continues to evolve. Her ever-evolving inspiration comes from nature and the works of classic impressionists, post impressionists, and contemporaries like the San Francisco Bay artists’ with their use of color and freedom for design.
