TODAY‘S HOURS: 1pm to 5pm

Louis Keiner

I am a college professor in the HTC Honors College at Coastal Carolina University, where I teach both in Science and in Honors. My academic work frequently involves analyzing satellite imagery to better understand the complexities of the coastal environment, blending imagery with scientific inquiry and technology to uncover patterns and processes often hidden from view. This connection between science and imagery significantly influences my photographic art, shaping both my perspective and my techniques.

While my photography spans a diverse range of subjects, I most of all love capturing the beauty of nature. My work reflects a technical approach that unveils aspects of the natural world often hidden from the naked eye. I explore nature at time scales beyond ordinary human perception, whether by using long exposures to transform the turbulence of a waterfall into a smooth, silky flow, or using a split-second exposure to freeze the rapid motion of a hummingbird’s wings in flight. My approach also extends to revealing phenomena that are otherwise invisible, such as the colors of faint objects in the night sky or the interplay of light and shadow in unique and unexpected ways.

My work invites viewers to see the world from a fresh perspective, one shaped by a blend of scientific curiosity and artistic creativity. I hope this combination helps bridge the gap between what we know and what we imagine and deepens our connection to the natural world.

“Under the Cherry Grove Pier” 2016
A long exposure under the old Cherry Grove Pier at night. What would normally be hidden in the darkness under the pier is revealed, as the stars in the sky look down the smoothed white foam of the incoming breaking waves.
