| Carol has always been inspired by the diverse landscapes of North and South Carolina and her childhood home state of Virginia. Every aspect of her life, from artist and teacher to mom and home manager are influenced by her intrigue of the southern landscape and the pleasure it provides its people and native wildlife.
Carol lives in Belmont, NC and has a studio in McAdenville where she paints and teaches art weekly. She graduated from Queens College-now University- in Charlotte, NC with a double major in studio art and museum studies and a minor in biology as she had a strong interest in medical illustration. Not long after she graduated she attended University of North Carolina Charlotte to receive her teaching certificate and has taught art in the public and private sectors throughout her life. She is rarely without her artist bag full of sketchbooks and watercolor paintings she has done through the years. They not only tell a story but are a testament to her love for art. Carol remained focused primarily on the medium of watercolor as an extremely adaptable and convenient means of expressing her daily observations. In the past 8 years she has enjoyed translating the skill of washed layering and the spontaneity of watercolor to her developing style as an oil painter. Perhaps the greatest influence in Carol’s painting career was study with watercolorist Marbury Hill Brown during her time at Queens College. More recently, painting in the working studio of nationally acclaimed artist Curt Butler has helped her navigate the watercolor to oil bridge. These days, Carol is delighted to continue study with sister Kelly Atkinson, as they collaborate and paint together whenever possible. Carol has been an artist with Island Art Gallery since 2014.
